Kim Hyun Joong
OFTEN hailed as the successor to Hallyu star Bae Yong Jun, Kim Hyun Joong knows that he has a lot to live up to.
Recently invited to the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games as a representative of South Korea, Kim was the only Korean and non-Chinese performing with Chinese stars during the opening ceremony, singing the Mandarin theme song Sunshine Again.
“It was the first time I’d ever sung in Mandarin so I practised a lot. I listened to the music some 5,000 times,” he shared at an interview.
He also attended a fan gathering session during his two-day The Face Shop Asia Tour in Malaysia to launch the White Tree Snow Whitening Skin Care Line in Kuala Lumpur.
Kim, 24, gained popularity after being cast as cool F4 member Yoon Ji Hoo in Boys Over Flowers (Kkot Boda Namja) the hit Korean TV adaptation of popular Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango.
He plays the leading man, genius student Baek Seung-jo, in his second series Playful Kiss (Jangnanseuron Kiss), an adaptation of Japanese manga Itazura Na Kiss. Playful Kiss Special Edition is also the first Korean drama to air on YouTube and scored one million views in five days.
Like the characters he plays in both series, who end up falling for plain-looking girls, Kim revealed: “I prefer an easygoing rather than a glamorous girl.”
The singer-actor, whose impeccable complexion was the envy of all present, was asked his secret to good skin.
“I’m an artiste and so I tend to put on a lot of makeup. On days when I have to use make-up, I’ll first prep my skin using THEFACESHOP mask packs. That is the secret to keeping my skin in good condition.”
He even carries out a three-step beauty regime before going to bed. “Before I sleep, I shower and cleanse. Then, I apply skin lotion and I also use mask packs.”
He added that sleep is important in revitalising the skin. “I try to get enough sleep and every morning, I’d do some sports or physical activity, which is the natural secret to keeping the body fit.”
The handsome singer-actor says he would like to focus on his singing and spoke of his upcoming project – a solo album followed by an Asia tour next year.
